After days of thunderstorms and torrential downpours, a quieter spell of weather is finally settling across much of the UK. However, the familiar north-south divide is not disappearing altogether, with rain lingering in some areas while others enjoy warm sunshine.
A ridge of high pressure will become established across the UK on Thursday, bringing calmer conditions and allowing temperatures to return to values much closer to the seasonal average.
Most places will be dry, with sunny spells developing widely across England and Wales. Although a few isolated showers cannot be ruled out beneath thicker cloud, these are expected to be few and far between.
It will feel noticeably fresher than in recent days, particularly overnight, as humidity levels continue to fall.

The next Atlantic weather system will begin approaching from the north-west during Thursday evening, with an occluded front introducing outbreaks of rain to north-western Scotland and strengthening winds.

Friday will bring another largely dry and bright day to England and Wales, although cloudier skies are expected farther north. Rain will continue across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, accompanied by brisk south-westerly winds.
Despite the cooler conditions, temperatures will still climb to around 20°C in northern areas and 25°C farther south.
