The flames may soon be extinguished, but scientists and conservationists warn that the biggest challenge could still lie ahead. So why could the impact of the Cairngorms wildfire be felt for decades to come?
Wildfire in the Cairngorms. Credit @SurreyPalmsWX on XNearly two weeks after the fire first broke out in the Cairngorms National Park, firefighters continue to tackle hotspots across parts of the Scottish Highlands.
The blaze forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and scorched vast areas of moorland and forest, leaving behind a landscape of blackened earth and smouldering vegetation.
Authorities have described the wildfire as one of the worst ever seen in the region.
Although emergency crews have managed to slow its spread, concerns remain that underground fires could continue to burn in peat-rich areas for weeks or even months.
The destruction extends far beyond the immediate damage caused by the flames. Ecologists warn that some of Britain’s rarest habitats have been affected, including sections of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, home to Scots pine trees that are hundreds of years old.
Why recovery could take so long
While grasses and shrubs may begin to recover relatively quickly, forests are far more difficult to restore.
