The UN’s weather agency, warned earlier this week that the Earth’s climate is further out of balance than at any time in recorded history. There are now also worries that El Niño will exacerbate impact. How could this happen?
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned that Earth’s climate is now more “out of balance” than at any point in recorded history.
This imbalance refers to the difference between the amount of heat energy the planet absorbs from the Sun and the amount it radiates back into space. According to the WMO, Earth is currently absorbing far more heat than it can release, largely due to greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide produced by human activities like burning fossil fuels. This excess energy is not harmlessly dispersed, in fact, it is accumulating within the climate system and driving widespread changes.
My new State of the Climate report over at @CarbonBrief finds that 2025 had the:
️ Warmest ocean heat content
️ Tied as second warmest surface temps
️ Second warmest troposphere
️ Record high sea level and GHGs
️ Record low
