The maritime polar airmass descending from Greenland towards the Gulf of Genoa formed a deep area of the low-pressure system. At the same time, the associated cold front was located on the northern side of the Alps. This is typically how the prominent change in the weather occurs in this region.

However, the cold air mass often seeks the lower resistance to overcome the natural barrier and to continue sinking southwards. This is achieved through the narrow valley gap between the eastern side of the Alps and the Carpathian mountains, where cold air sinks through the so-called “Vienna gate“.
