New satellite research has revealed that the Gulf Stream underwent a rapid strengthening between 2014 and 2023, raising fresh questions about what changes in the powerful Atlantic current could mean for weather across the UK and western Europe.

Scientists have now analysed 31 years of satellite observations and found that the current went through a prolonged weaker phase between 2005 and 2014 before rapidly intensifying from around 2014 onwards.
So, could this have an impact on the UK’s winter weather?
What does a stronger Gulf Stream mean for the UK?
The Gulf Stream plays an important role in maintaining the UK’s relatively mild climate.
It transports large amounts of heat northwards across the Atlantic, helping to keep western Europe considerably warmer than other regions at similar latitudes. The Met Office notes that without the warming influence of the Atlantic circulation, the UK’s climate would be significantly colder.

The new research suggests that stronger Gulf Stream conditions are generally associated with warmer and wetter winters across western Europe, while weaker conditions tend to be linked with colder and drier winters.
That does not mean Britain is now guaranteed a mild and wet winter.
