Met Office models hint at UK heatwave comeback as temperatures plunge this week

Temperatures are tumbling after one of the UK’s most exceptional summers on record, but the weather maps are already looking ahead. A cooler and wetter spell is expected first, while longer-range Met Office guidance leaves the door open to another dose of summer warmth.

After weeks of exceptional heat, the UK is now experiencing a very different weather pattern.

Low pressure has replaced the dominant high pressure which helped drive the recent heatwaves, bringing much cooler temperatures, showers and thunderstorms to many areas.

Wednesday will be a noticeably fresher day, with sunshine and showers and temperatures generally around or below average. Some showers could be heavy, particularly in the north, with hail and thunder possible.

Thursday will remain unsettled, with further heavy and potentially thundery showers and temperatures staying close to seasonal averages.

But while the immediate forecast is increasingly clear, the longer-range picture becomes much more interesting.

What do the Met Office models show?

The latest Met Office long-range guidance suggests the unsettled weather could continue through much of the latter part of August, with low pressure becoming more influential towards the end of the month.

There should still be some drier and brighter interludes, and a ridge of high pressure could bring a largely dry and settled start to the final week of August.

Temperatures will remain around average next week, with the cooler conditions a stark contrast to the exceptional heat seen earlier this summer.

However, the signal then becomes more unsettled again towards the turn of the month, with showers or longer spells of rain
