Met Office issues warnings for 43 areas as thunderstorms and heavy rain arrive

Thunderstorms are set to become more widespread across parts of the UK, with some areas facing intense downpours, hail and lightning. New Met Office warnings reveal where the greatest impacts are expected, but the wet weather will not be evenly distributed across the country.

The latest change in weather brings a sharp contrast to the exceptional heat and prolonged dry conditions seen across the UK this summer.

The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for parts of Northern Ireland, northern England and eastern Scotland, with heavy showers expected to develop through Wednesday and continue into Thursday in some areas.

The warnings highlight the potential for frequent lightning, hail, heavy rainfall and flash flooding, with travel disruption and power cuts also possible.

Where are the thunderstorm warnings?

A yellow warning is in force across parts of Northern Ireland from midday on Tuesday until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

Parts of north-east Scotland, including areas around Aberdeen, are covered from 2pm until 9pm.

Meanwhile, a warning covering parts of northern England begins at 7pm on Wednesday and continues until 10am on Thursday.

The Met Office has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings for parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England as heavy downpours, hail and lightning are expected.

The areas affected include locations around Manchester and Newcastle, alongside a number of surrounding areas.

Some parts of northern England could see up to 50mm of rain in six hours, while around 30mm could fall within a few hours across parts of Northern Ireland
