UK temperatures could reach as high as 45°C by 2056 due to climate change, according to Met Office scientists.
What a 1976 heatwave could look like in 2056As large parts of the country swelter in temperatures of 37°C and 38°C, an even hotter future seems unthinkable to many.
But scientists at the Met Office believe that in 30 years’ time, temperatures could reach 45°C in England; 41°C in Wales; 38°C in Scotland and 30°C in Northern Ireland.
This week marks the 50th anniversary of the infamous 1976 heatwave, which brought not only record-breaking temperatures but also drought, water restrictions and pressure on infrastructure.
By using data from Met Office climate projections, we can glimpse into what an event like the 1976 summer would look like in the 2050s. The drought was particularly bad in the south west of England, where taps were turned off and water rationed via standpipes in the street
s instead. But average UK summers have warmed by around 1.4°C since then. Scientists believe that a heatwave comparable to 1976 would be around 3°
