A new study found that during an abrupt climate crisis in the past, the North Atlantic did not respond uniformly. Some currents weakened, others strengthened, and the Gulf Stream shifted. Why does this matter to us today?

During the Younger Dryas, one of the most abrupt climate change events in Earth’s recent history, Europe once again experienced near-glacial conditions. Glaciers advanced across Scotland, sea ice expanded in the North Atlantic, and Greenland cooled by up to 10°C in just a few decades. However, some 800 kilometers east of New York City, something entirely different was happening.

While much of the North Atlantic cooled, the waters off Nova Scotia, Canada, warmed by 4 to 5°C . This apparent contradiction intrigued scientists for years. Now, research published in Nature Communications offers an explanation that could have implications far beyond reconstructing past climate.

The results indicate that the Gulf Stream shifted hundreds of kilometers northward in response to a reorganization of the Atlantic ocean
