Scotland has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by more than half since 1990, but newly released figures have shown that the pace of progress has slowed to just a 1% reduction over the past year.

Scotland has cut its greenhouse gas emissions by more than half since 1990, a milestone that should be celebrated – until you look at how much of that has happened recently.

It seems the rate of the emissions decline keeps shrinking year on year. In fact, the latest figures show emissions fell by just 1% in 2024 compared to the previous year – that’s about 0.4 million tonnes in equivalent CO2, which is roughly half the 2% drop recorded in 2023.

What’s more, some sectors actually seem to be getting worse. Domestic transport, which at 28% is already Scotland’s single biggest source of emissions, went up. So did international aviation and
