40°C in parts of Europe, snow to sea level and -14°C elsewhere: Half the world experiences an extreme winter

We may be basking in temperatures approaching 40°C across parts of Europe, but on the other side of the world it’s a very different story: snow, frost and temperatures as low as -14°C.

Across parts of Europe, temperatures are set to reach 40°C again this week. Fans are working overtime, and tropical nights are making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep

But while much of Europe is longing for cooler weather, the exact opposite is happening on the other side of the world. As Europe basks in the height of summer, vast areas of the Southern Hemisphere have been plunged into the depths of winter, with snow, ice and temperatures cold enough to freeze your breath. It may sound unbelievable, but it’s true.

-14°C in ArgentinaLet’s start in South America. Winter has arrived in full force across Argentina. In Patagonia, temperatures plunged to a bitter -14°C, with many areas remaining well below freezing for days and frost warnings issued across several provinces.

Australia is currently experiencing temperatures well below average for this time of year.

The really extraordinary part is that snow fell in places where it hadn’t been seen for decades. In the coastal city of Mar del Plata, snowflakes fell for the first time in more than 30 years, reaching all the way to the Atlantic coastline.
