The Antarctic ice shelf isn’t as picturesque as this anymore and is marred by unprecedented rains. The UK has been experiencing wetter winters for the past few years. This happens to be true for Antarctica as well. Unlike the UK, where more rain has caused some inconvenience, rain in the Antarctica means greater risks for those conducting research in the region. This is where robots could help.
Changing weather in Antarctica
The picture of Antarctica as a vast, endless shelf of ice is changing rapidly. Over the past few years, the region has been experiencing warm weather, triggered by warm air flowing from the equatorial regions. Warmer temperatures have resulted in rains that persist for days on end, when even infrequent rain was a rarity even a couple of decades ago.
In March 2022, the French-Italian station at Concordia, near the South Pole, recorded temperatures of -11.5 degrees Celsius. While
