Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th typhoon of the year, made landfall in Yuhuan, a city in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, eastern China, at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to the National Meteorological Center. More details in this report.
Typhoon Dolphin (known in Chinese as Baihaitun, or “white dolphin”) made landfall in China on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. local time (09:30 GMT). The center of the system reached the coast near Yuhuan, in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, in eastern China.
At the time of landfall, maximum sustained winds near the center were approximately 151 km/h (94 mph), equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with a central pressure of around 945 hPa.
Dolphin is the official international name submitted by Hong Kong, referring to the Chinese white dolphin (Sousa chinensis), a mascot of the city. Under the WMO/ESCAP Typhoon Committee naming system, it is the 13th named tropical cyclone of the 2026 season in the northwestern Pacific (designation T2613 or 12W).
It has no additional local name in China beyond its semantic translation, “Baihaitun.” Before reaching China, the system had passed through Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, where it caused injuries and power outages.
Alerts activated and areas under watch
The hardest-hit areas are concentrated along China’s eastern coast, particularly Zhejiang Province, including Taizhou, Wenzhou, Yuhuan, and central and eastern areas, as well as northern Fujian, Shanghai, much of Jiangsu, northeastern Jiangxi, and south-central Anhui.
