Understanding neutrinos: The research that led to the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics
Neutrinos are electrically neutral subatomic particles with extremely small masses that interact very weakly with matter. Produced by nuclear processes and high-energy astrophysical phenomena, they travel vast distances and carry information about some of the most extreme environments in the universe.
IceCube is a neutrino observatory located near the South Pole. The detector uses approximately one cubic kilometer of ice equipped with thousands of optical sensors to record the light produced when neutrinos interact with matter.
In 2026, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francis Halzen for his contributions to the development of IceCube and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. His work helped establish neutrino astronomy as a new way to study the universe.
What are neutrinos?
Neutrinos are elementary particles belonging to the lepton family, like electrons, but they have no electric charge and an …….
