UK weather: Where heavy rain and thunderstorms are most likely this week

After the driest July on record for England and Wales, the pattern finally begins to shift this week. However, while some areas face heavy rain, thunderstorms and localised flooding this week, others are set to remain frustratingly dry.

Low pressure has replaced the prolonged spell of high pressure that dominated throughout much of July, bringing a much more unsettled start to August for some, though others could still struggle to see meaningful rainfall.

Thunderstorm warnings in Scotland and Northern Ireland

By Tuesday afternoon, persistent rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland will gradually break up into heavy, thundery showers, with some of these reaching western England and Wales.

Some downpours could deliver 20 to 30mm of rain in just one or two hours, bringing the risk of localised flooding.

A Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning is in force for Northern Ireland from midday until 9pm, where the strongest storms are expected, as well as across south eastern areas of Scotland until tomorrow night.

Southern England stays largely dry once again

While northern areas become increasingly unsettled, much of the Midlands, eastern England and the southeast will remain largely dry.

There will be sunny spells, although skies will be cloudier than at the start of the week. While it won’t be quite as hot as Monday, temperatures will still reach the mid to high 20s, with 30 to 31°C possible across eastern England.
