Tropical Storm Isaias forecast to become first hurricane of 2026 Atlantic season

Tropical Storm Isaias could rapidly strengthen into a powerful hurricane before targeting the northern Gulf Coast, bringing damaging winds, storm surge and up to 10 inches of rain.

Tropical Storm Isaias formed in the southern Gulf early on Wednesday and is expected to strengthen quickly. It may become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season by Thursday. The northern Gulf Coast is being put on alert as the storm starts to turn north this week.

Isaias could become a dangerous hurricane over the Gulf

Tropical Storm Isaias developed early Wednesday in the southern Gulf, with maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph. It is expected to strengthen rapidly, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts that Isaias will become a hurricane by Thursday.
