The euphoria over Spain’s World Cup victory generated vibrations that were recorded by seismometers in Madrid.

Just a few minutes after midnight, on the night of Sunday, July 19, into Monday, July 20, Spain was crowned champion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0. The historic result gave Spain its second World Cup title and prompted millions of people to celebrate the victory.

Across Spain, as well as abroad—in Italy, from Rome to Milan, thousands of Spaniards celebrated the result—the excitement surrounding the victory was enormous. When a national soccer team wins the World Cup, it sparks a celebration unlike any other.

The celebration was so intense that Madrid’s seismograph recorded a signal just as the match ended.

According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute, known as the IGN, the seismic sensor at Madrid’s Royal Observatory recorded the two key moments of the match between Argentina and Spain that literally made the city vibrate. It cannot be described as an earthquake, as we will explain shortly, but the jumping, shouting and movement of thousands of people celebrating enthusiastically were detected by the sensitive seismic sensors.
