Heavy rain and strengthening winds across the UK ahead of the first named storm of the season

Yesterday, the Met Office named Storm Austen, a disruptive wind and rain system that’s expected to arrive from late Thursday and into Friday. Before this storm arrives, there will be other slow moving weather fronts affecting various parts of the country, bringing outbreaks rain, strengthening winds and cloud cover. How unsettled will the weather be where you are?

Overnight a weather front cleared to the northeast, but this was quickly followed by another weather front, this time bringing wet and windy weather to Northern Ireland, Wales, South and South West England.

Through this morning, these areas should expect frequent and potentially heavy outbreaks of rain, alongside plenty of grey cloud cover and an increase wind strength.

In some other luckier areas of the East and North of England, there might be some clear and bright spells to start, though these will quickly be replaced by more dreary and unsettled conditions.

The South West of England, the Cotswolds, parts of the West Midlands and most of Wales will see increasing wind strength through the first half of the morning. This comes as a warm front meeting a cold front, causing some heavy rain and strong wind gusts.
