Dry spell deepens across parts of England as drought fears intensify

The day is off to another settled and bright day, with some cloud persisting in parts of the North alongside some dampness and rain. This rain however is not likely to extend to parts of England which have been identified at risk of reaching drought status. When will it rain again?

The morning has been cloudy for many northern parts of the UK, including Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England. As the sunshine strengthens, much of this cloud will ease and allow for some longer-lasting sunny spells.

Cloudy in the north, clearer skies in the South

This is particularly true for England and Wales, where the sun is already shining strongly across the clear and bright skies.

A few patches of rain are likely to appear over the far North West of Scotland, and a few fleeting ones could appear in the north-eastern corner as well, though these will be few and far in between.

The largely settled and sunny conditions will allow temperatures to reach highs of 28°C in London, and 26°C across large parts of Southern England including Southampton and Plymouth. Highs of 26°C also for Cardiff and Birmingham, feeling slightly cooler further North with 20-21°C in Newcastle, Manchester, and Belfast.
