What is El Niño?
El Niño, and its counterpart La Niña, is a phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a naturally occurring climate pattern and one of the most powerful drivers of year-to-year climate variability. Its characterised by above-average sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.
El Niño events typically occur every two to seven years, developing between March and June and reaching peak intensity between November and February. It usually lasts between nine and 12 months, and exerts the strongest influence on global temperatures throughout the following year.

Its effects can vary depending on El Niño’s intensity and duration, when it developed and its interactions with other climate variability models, like the Indian Ocean Dipole. Different regions are of the world are affected differently and even when ENSO is neutral, extreme weather can still occur.
