New research shows 3 different climate zones across the Arctic that respond differently to global warming
A new aerosol dataset spanning two decades, between 2003 and 2024, and 8 stations across the Arctic shows that the Arctic has multiple climate systems, not just one, that respond in their own way to global warming. This was combined with satellite data and AI-assisted mapping to divide the Arctic into 3 zones, each with their own atmospheric personalities. In one, warming could increase the number of particles that help clouds form, and in another those particles could be less abundant. The third is dependent on what happens at factories thousands of miles away.
Clouds and their Particles
In order for clouds to form, they need cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), which are aerosol particles the right size and chemistry around which water vapor condenses into droplets. In the right conditions, more CCN can produce more numerous and smaller cloud droplets which make clouds more reflective. CCN …….
