Met Office issues yellow weather warning as 70mph gusts hit Scotland and 22°C warmth reaches the south

A sharp contrast is emerging in the UK forecast, with some areas facing powerful gusts while others enjoy temperatures more typical of late summer. But a changing weather pattern could soon bring a very different feel.

Tuesday afternoon will bring a welcome improvement for many after a wet start, with spells of sunshine developing across England and Wales. However, showers will continue across Scotland and northern England, where some could turn heavy and thundery.

Showers should fade through Tuesday evening, leaving much of the country dry under clear skies. Mist and fog patches could develop locally across England and Wales overnight, while cloud and strengthening winds arrive in the north. Rain will reach northern Scotland later, and temperatures will dip to around 6–9°C.

70mph gales threaten north-west Scotland on Wednesday

Wednesday will begin on a bright note across England and Wales, with early sunshine before cloud builds across Wales and western England. Further north, conditions will be cloudier and windier, with rain approaching from the northwest during the afternoon.

Gusts of 50–60mph are expected widely across affected parts of Scotland, with exposed coastal and hilly areas potentially seeing gusts of around 70mph.
