UK weather: Are signs of autumn already appearing on the maps as August turns more unsettled?

The UK’s latest heatwave is coming to an end, but the weather maps are already hinting at a very different pattern for the second half of August. Atlantic fronts could bring more rain and showers before high pressure returns, while temperatures remain above average.

Saturday will mark the start of the transition away from the exceptional heat. It will remain very warm and humid across south-east England, where heavy showers and thunderstorms will gradually clear.

Elsewhere, conditions will be much more settled, with sunny spells and temperatures closer to the seasonal average. Northern Scotland will remain more unsettled, with further showers possible.

By Sunday, fresher air will reach south-east England, bringing a noticeable change after the heatwave. Much of the UK should remain dry with sunny spells, although it will become increasingly breezy in the north-west as bands of rain begin moving in.

The change becomes more interesting from the middle of next week.

Between Tuesday 18th August and Thursday 27th August, current long-range guidance suggests a more changeable spell could develop as Atlantic frontal systems begin making greater progress towards the UK.
