After weeks of persistent heat and dry weather, the forecast finally brings a change. While this week brings the best chance yet of some much-needed rain, will it be enough to make a difference?

Sunday has already brought outbreaks of rain to parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland.

That system will clear overnight, but attention quickly turns to another weather front arriving on Monday with the potential to bring heavier and more persistent rain to parts of the country.

Warm for now, but cooler weather is on the way

For the rest of Sunday, skies will brighten across much of England and Wales after a cloudier start, allowing warm sunny spells to develop.

Temperatures will reach the mid to high 20s in the warmest southern spots, although it will be noticeably cooler across Scotland and Northern Ireland, where highs will range between 17°C and 19°C under lower cloud and patchy light rain.

The coming week brings a significant change in conditions as the prolonged dry, hot and sunny weather gives way to a more changeable pattern with rain gradually becoming more widespread and a return to much cooler conditions, but will it be enough to ease the drought?

Overnight, most places remain relatively mild and increasingly humid, with towns and cities across the south holding at around 16°C to 17°C.

The start of the week turns increasingly unsettled

Monday begins rather cloudy for many, although the far southeast may see some early sunshine.

Longer spells of rain will push into Northern Ireland before extending into western Scotland
