The Public Health Situation Analysis on the El Niño phenomenon recommends that governments strengthen preparedness and response measures.The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has published an analysis of the potential public health impacts of the 2026–2027 El Niño event. The report examines how extreme weather events, including droughts, floods and heat waves, could affect population health, health services and other key determinants of health.

Seasonal forecasts indicate a higher probability of above-normal temperatures across much of the Americas, accompanied by regionally varying rainfall patterns, including an increased risk of drought in parts of Central America, the Caribbean and South America, while other areas are expected to see above-average precipitation.

El Niño and vector-borne diseases
