UK weather: Patchy rain and cooler temperatures as Met Office warns of a return to the heat next week

A change is finally underway as cooler air and scattered showers move across the UK. However, this rain is expected to make little difference, and with temperatures forecast to climb again next week, could the UK see its fourth heatwave developing?

A cold front has finally broken the recent spell of hot and settled weather, bringing a fresher feel to many areas.

While many places could see at least some rain over the weekend, many places are unlikely to receive enough to make much difference after an exceptionally dry start to the month.

Sunday turns cooler with scattered showers

Sunday will feel noticeably fresher as a north westerly airflow spreads across the country. Showers will continue drifting south through the day, with the heaviest of these over the hills of Scotland.

Elsewhere, showers should generally be light to moderate with brighter intervals developing between them. Southern England is expected to become largely dry during the afternoon after any early showers clear away.

While this weekend will bring some rain, it will weaken and become increasingly scattered as it pushes southwards leaving many areas across England and Wales with very little meaningful rain ahead of another hot spell later next week

Temperatures will be lower than in recent days, with highs of 22°C to 25°C across southern England and 17°C to 19°C across much of Scotland and northern England.

Compared with Saturday, temperatures across the Midlands, East Anglia and southeast England could be 5°C to 7°C lower as the cold front clears southwards.
