When readers encounter heatwaves in major media outlets, they must also understand what is causing them. But most of the media outlets in the UK seem to have forgotten to mention it.
Media outlets in the UK covered heatwaves but not their cause. When heatwaves struck the UK in June, the media covered them extensively. Nearly 2,500 articles were written in just nine prominent daily media outlets within a week.
However, just over a quarter of these articles actually connected the extreme weather event with the underlying cause – climate change, an analysis by a non-profit organization, Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has found.
UK hit by heatwaves
The record-breaking heatwave that the UK faced in June was bad but not a one-off event. In the previous month of May, temperatures soared to 35 degrees Celsius, and July has already seen two weeks where temperatures have remained higher than normal for the summer months.

Much of this has been mentioned in the media, with reports that the heat has affected people across the country. A report from the Imperial College London, earlier this week, found that 2,700 people had died in the UK in the months of May and June.
An estimated 1,100 people would not have died if the temperatures had not been as high.
What these reports clearly failed to do is connect these extreme heat events to human-induced climate change.
