UK weather: Parts of Britain face 20-day heatwave as dry spell stretches beyond a month

Warm, settled weather is set to continue across much of the UK this week, with sunshine dominating and temperatures climbing to around 29C. Although a few showers are possible in northern areas, significant rainfall will remain in short supply for most.

Some locations in the southwest are experiencing their 17th consecutive day of official heatwave conditions on Tuesday, with forecasts suggesting that number could reach 20 consecutive days by the end of the week if temperatures remain above the required thresholds.

High pressure keeps the UK warm and dry

The prolonged spell of hot and dry weather is being driven by a large and stubborn area of high pressure anchored just to the west of the UK. This has blocked Atlantic weather systems from moving in, allowing sunshine to dominate while meaningful rainfall has become increasingly scarce across many parts of England and Wales.

On Tuesday afternoon, most places will remain dry with sunny spells, although eastern parts of England will hold onto more cloud as slightly fresher northerly air filters southwards.

One or two brief showers cannot be ruled out across the far east, but these are expected to be isolated, short-lived and unlikely to bring any substantial rainfall.

Very little rain is in the forecast this week.

A few showers may also develop across northwest Scotland, while elsewhere conditions will remain dry into the evening.

Temperatures will widely reach the mid to high 20s, peaking at around 29C across central and southern England.
