A Unicef report has found that half the world’s children are now exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards – from heatwaves to floods – with some communities already seeing the consequences
A new UNICEF report warns that more than one billion children worldwide are now exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards, including floods, droughts, extreme heat and storms.In Launkalana, in the Rigo district of Papua New Guinea, hundreds of children swim across a crocodile-filled river every day to get to school. A footbridge that used to take them across the Kemp Welch river washed away during heavy rains in 2012 and the community hasn’t been able to raise the money to replace it since. The youngest children get priority on a few small boats the community owns, but everyone else swims.
This is one of many stories laid out in Unicef’s latest Children’s Climate Risk Report, which found that more than one billion children worldwide are now living with at least three overlapping climate hazards threatening their health, education and survival.
