For decades, the climate debate has focused primarily on protecting ecosystems, reducing emissions, and advancing the energy transition. However, there is growing scientific consensus that climate change is, above all, a direct threat to human health.

Prolonged droughts, increasingly intense heat waves, devastating floods, wildfires, and the spread of vector-borne diseases are already affecting millions of people around the world.

Against this backdrop, a group of scientists from the Pan-European Commission on Climate and Health has made an unprecedented request: that the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declare the climate crisis a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), as it has done for Ebola, Zika, swine flu, and COVID-19.
