Barbary macaques are an endangered species, with only 8,000 are thought to exist in the wild; the birth of four baby monkeys at the UK conservation facility is a small but important win, conservationists say.

Four baby Barbary macaques have been born high up on the treetops of Trentham Monkey Forest in Stoke-on-Trent, which conservations are hailing as a “small but important win for a highly endangered species”.

Monkeys see a 50% decline in 40 years

Over the last 40 years, populations of Barbary macaques have decreased by over 50% due to habitat loss, wildfires, and being victim of the illegal pet trade. Fewer than 8,000 of these endangered ‘Old World’ monkeys are thought to exist in the wild in their native Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, plus a small population introduced in Gibraltar.

Trentham Monkey Forest is home to 140 free roaming Barbary macaques. These monkeys can go about their days living lives similar to their wild counterparts thanks to the 60-acre forest that mimics
