As the world warms, wildfires will increase in number and intensity, but models of these blazes don’t represent real-world conditions. New software from the University of Glasgow hopes to solve the problem.

When a wildfire ignites, time is of the essence. These unpredictable fires are fought on multiple fronts, from the ground and from the air.

Specialist aircraft like firefighting helicopters are vital in tackling blazes, but pilots face dangerous and difficult conditions they aren’t trained for. New flight simulation software developed by researchers at the University of Glasgow could improve their training.

New software incorporates unpredictability

Reaching a wildfire is dangerous; they can spread rapidly and pilots must fly through smoke and quickly changing winds at low speeds before releasing fire retardant or water.

But pilots aren’t trained to fly in these conditions. Conventional flight simulators teach them how to take off, fly and land, not to navigate the unpredictable nature of wildfires or the effect of the downdraft caused by the helicopter blades.
