The formation of an extratropical cyclone last Friday brought strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms with tornadoes to southern Brazil. One city nearly disappeared from the map as a result.

Total destruction. Severe weather that struck southern Brazil, caused by an extratropical cyclone, claimed lives and caused devastating damage in a city in the state of Paraná. According to official reports from the Paraná state government, the state meteorological agency (SIMEPAR) confirmed the passage of a tornado with winds estimated, based on initial assessments, to be between 180 and 250 km/h (110 and 155 mph).
The extreme weather event occurred in the southern part of the state on the afternoon of Friday, 7 November, amidst storms associated with the anticipated extratropical cyclone. Official information, released Friday night, classified the tornado that devastated 80% of the city of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu as an F2.
An F3 tornado on the Fujita scale has winds ranging from 250 to 320 km/h.
