A territory becoming uninhabitable

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is an archipelago located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, not far from its border with the Atlantic Ocean, immediately south of the island of Newfoundland. Former colonies, these islands have seen their status evolve considerably in recent decades, first becoming an overseas territory in 1946, then an overseas department in 1976, a territorial collectivity with special status in 1985, and finally an overseas collectivity in 2003.
