Maritime forests remain largely untouched by commercial development and closely resemble the woodlands where Native Americans inhabited and early settlers settled hundreds of years ago. Trees, bushes, and other plants in maritime forests and estuaries withstand strong winds, periodic flooding, and salt spray.
