Britain’s homes are trapping dangerous levels of heat
Households struggled to stay cool, sleep comfortably, and afford the upgrades needed to cope with extreme heat, according to a poll asking Brits how this summer’s extreme heat affected them.
The survey found that more than 46% of people suffered poor sleep during the summer, rising to 55% among 35-54‑year‑olds.
The heat also affected wellbeing – more than a third (37%) saying that the heat inside their homes harmed their mental or physical health, with younger adults hit hardest (49% of 18-34‑year‑olds).
In some cases, homes became unusable, with a fifth of respondents finding their bedroom unusable during the heatwaves, and 5% even resorting to sleeping outside.
