The Atlantic reaches peak hurricane season without a hurricane

Hurricane season is at its climatological peak, but the Atlantic is still waiting for hurricane number one, and the clock on a historic record is ticking.

The Atlantic hurricane season has reached the date when activity is historically at its highest, but something important is missing: hurricanes. As of September 10, five tropical storms: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly and Edouard, have formed across the basin. Not one has reached the 74 mph threshold needed to become a hurricane.

We are now deep enough into the season that this is no longer just a slow start. The Atlantic is approaching territory rarely seen in the modern satellite era, raising an intriguing question: Could 2026 somehow make it through the entire season without producing a hurricane?

We are at the peak of hurricane season — with zero hurricanes

September 10 is considered the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. It doesn’t mean the most storms always occur on this exact date, but historically, this is when the combination of warm ocean water, abundant tropical moisture and favorable atmospheric conditions tends to make the basin particularly active. This year has gone in a very different direction.

Five storms have managed to develop, but every one has fallen short of hurricane strength. If that streak continues, 2026 will push past some of the latest starts to hurricane activity seen during the satellite era.
