Three hurricanes are spread across the central and eastern Pacific currently, and they could bring some hazardous conditions to California and Hawaii.

The Pacific Ocean is just teeming with activity this week. As of Thursday, three hurricanes are in the central and eastern parts of the basin: Lowell, Karina and Marie.

So far this year, 15 tropical depressions and storms have formed in these areas. And going forward, activity in this ocean looks to continue, as conditions are primed for development.

Why is the Pacific so active this year?

A couple of factors are driving the increased tropical storm activity in the Pacific Ocean this year. The biggest of which is El Niño, which emerged earlier in the year and continues to strengthen across the equatorial Pacific.

During El Niño years, warmer water is pushed into eastern areas of the Pacific, right around the area where development occurs. This heat in the ocean helps to fuel storms. The environment also sees less wind shear, which makes it primed for storms to strengthen.

Hawaii on alert as Lowell looks to make right turn
