Climate change is fueling increasingly extreme wildfires, but it does not fully explain their origin. The WMO warns that forest management and human activity remain key factors.
Wildfires are no longer just a problem in regions that have historically been affected.Wildfires have become one of the greatest threats of the 21st century. Every summer, we see images of towering smoke plumes, mass evacuations, lockdowns, and thousands of acres reduced to ash, most recently in Spain, France, and Greece.
However, experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) emphasize that these major wildfires result from the interaction of several factors: extreme weather conditions, the buildup of vegetation fuel, changes in land use, and, in most cases, an ignition source caused by human activity.
Climate change creates highly favorable conditions
The WMO notes that rising temperatures, more frequent and prolonged droughts, declining soil moisture, and heat waves mean that vegetation stays dry for longer and becomes much more flammable.
In other words, climate change does not ignite wildfires, but it creates the conditions that allow a single spark to develop into a major wildfire.
Other factors are just as important, including the accumulation of biomass, reduced forest management, and the lack of appropriate land management practices adapted to today’s conditions.
Another contributing factor is the expansion of the wildland-urban interface, where homes and infrastructure are increasingly built near forests, raising both the risk of ignition and the difficulty of firefighting operations.
