UK weather: Drought declared as Met Office maps reveal where rain is most likely next week

The UK’s fourth heatwave eases and rain returns, but not everywhere will see it. Met Office maps show the areas with the best chance of rain next week.

The latest hot spell gradually comes to an end as we head towards August, with cooler and fresher air spreading southwards.

But will the cooldown also be accompanied by a return to wetter weather, or will the dry conditions continue?

Cooler air gradually pushes southwards today

A cold front continues to sink south across England and Wales, bringing increasing cloud and the odd patch of light rain or drizzle.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will continue to see scattered showers, some of them heavy, while the far southeast could still hold on to highs of 27 to 28°C before cooler air finally arrives.

Despite a cold front bringing much cooler temperatures across the UK, the dry weather shows no signs of ending, particularly for southern areas of the country. But could any rain finally ease the dry weather by next week?

Any lingering cloud and drizzle will clear away overnight, leaving Friday dry and sunny across much of England and Wales.

Further north, it will remain more changeable with showers affecting Scotland and Northern Ireland, and a few of these

reaching northern England. Temperatures will be much closer to average, with highs in the mid-20s across the south and the mid to high teens further north.
