Heat waves are no longer an exception in Europe, and the big question now is whether the continent could record 50°C and what conditions would make it possible.
Temperatures above 40°C are becoming increasingly common in several southern European countries.Just two decades ago, exceeding 40°C in European cities such as Paris, London, or Hamburg seemed like a fictional scenario, reserved for southern Europe, but today those values are already part of the continent’s climate reality.
The question now being raised by the scientific community is no longer whether Europe will continue warming, but how far that warming could go. Is it already possible to reach 50°C in Europe? Given the current outlook, it cannot be ruled out that some regions in the south could record those temperatures sooner rather than later.
Europe is already playing in a different climate league
The European continent is warming approximately twice as fast as the global average, something that is changing both the frequency and intensity of heat waves.
In recent years, record-breaking temperatures have been reached that until recently seemed extremely difficult to surpass, such as the 41.7°C recorded in the German town of Coschen or the nearly 38°C recorded in Lingwood, Strumpshaw Hill, in the United Kingdom last June.
