The Earth is warming and the global climate unbalanced; what are the findings from the latest WMO State of the Climate report?

The Earth’s climate is more unbalanced than it has ever been say the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and rapid and large-scale changes that have occurred within decades could have harmful repercussions for hundreds, even thousands, of years.

The Earth is warming due to increasing levels of greenhouse gases, but what else has the latest WMO State of the Climate report found?

An unstable climate

Under a stable climate, there is a balance between incoming energy from the sun and the amount of outgoing energy. But the climate is unbalanced due to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide reached its highest level in the last 2 million years, while methane and nitrous oxide reached their highest level in at least 800,000 years. These gases trap the outgoing heat, causing the atmosphere and oceans to warm and ice to melt.
