El Niño and La Niña are powerful climate patterns in the Pacific Ocean that influence weather across the globe. New forecasts suggest a strong El Niño could develop by the winter months. How likely is this shift and what impact will it have on weather and global temperatures?
A potentially strong El Niño weather pattern could emerge this summer and persist through late 2026 and possibly linger into 2027, according to the latest forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Although the signal is still developing, forecasters estimate there is around a 62% chance that El Niño conditions will emerge between June and August.
If that happens, it would likely bring erratic weather patterns and an additional boost to global temperatures.
