The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Produced the Second-Most Category 5 Hurricanes on Record for a Single Season

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is officially over. It lived up to most forecasters’ expectations. It was an active season with a near-normal number of named storms and major hurricanes, but an above-average number of Category 5 monsters.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revised its forecast for this year’s Atlantic hurricane season in early August, calling for 13-18 named storms (with tropical storm strength winds of 39 mph or greater). NOAA predicted 5-9 of them would become hurricanes (maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or stronger), of which 2-5 would strengthen into major hurricanes (with winds of 111mph or greater).
