Hurricane Melissa will approach Europe, transitioning from a tropical cyclone to a mid-latitude low-pressure system. The resulting depression could drop below 960 hPa south of Greenland.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Melissa will begin to lose its tropical characteristics as it is caught by the polar jet stream.Hurricane Melissa became the third hurricane to reach Category 5 strength in the Atlantic this year, making history with a minimum pressure of 892 hPa, tying the record set by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. This tropical behemoth reached maximum sustained winds of 297 km/h, placing it firmly within Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
As it passed through Jamaica, it caused at least 40 deaths, left ten people missing, and left 77% of the country without power. The hurricane weakened upon making landfall, dropping to Category 1. Models now show the storm moving closer to Europe, beginning a transition to a typical mid-latitude storm.
