UK weather: 250mm of rain forecast this week as Met Office issues rain warning

The weather is set to take a dramatic turn later this week as conditions shift from calm and settled to wet and stormy. Heavy rain and strong winds are on the way, with the risk of flooding and disruption and the remnants of a former hurricane could bring an extra sting in the tail by the weekend.

Bright and settled weather will dominate on Monday as high pressure stretches across much of southern Britain. Many areas will enjoy light winds and sunny spells, creating a calm and pleasant autumn day. Further north, conditions will be cloudier, with patchy outbreaks of rain moving eastwards across Scotland during the afternoon and evening, associated with a warm front.

As Monday evening progresses, cloud and light rain will continue across Scotland and Northern Ireland as a cold front approaches from the Atlantic. Further south, across England and Wales, skies will remain clearer with variable amounts of patchy cloud. Mist and fog will form in places overnight, particularly in rural areas.
