Hurricane Lorena is a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale and is approaching the Mexican coast of Baja California Sur. Sustained winds are reaching 130 km/h (81 mph) and are expected to make landfall this weekend, with gusts of up to 160 km/h (100 mph).

Hurricane Lorena has strengthened to Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale and is approaching the coast of Baja California Sur in North West Mexico. The storm is estimated to dump up to 250 mm of rain in some areas, generating an alert for the state’s more than 700,000 residents. Authorities have already activated emergency protocols to mitigate the damage.
Torrential rains of 100 to 250 mm are expected in Baja California Sur, intense downpours of 90 to 150 mm in Sonora and Sinaloa, and heavy rainfall of 80 mm in Baja California, Nayarit, and Jalisco. The stormy downpours will produce thunderstorms, the possible formation of tornadoes or waterspouts, and severe flooding.
