The chances of wildfire, and their strength, have been boosted by climate change caused by human activities.

Firefighters battle flames from the air in Türkiye

Weather conditions leading to this summer’s deadly Mediterranean wildfires in Türkiye, Cyprus and Greece were made ten times more likely due to climate change, according to scientists.

In July 2025, Greece, Türkiye and Cyprus experienced one of the most devastating months of wildfires in recent years, fuelled by record heatwaves, drought, and strong winds.

An international team of researchers analysed these events alongside weather conditions in the preceding months. They concluded that climate change increased the chances of the fires happening by ten times, while boosting their intensity by 22%.

Fire devastation

In Türkiye, as many as 177 forest fires occurred in July alone, devastating approximately 60,000 hectares of land.

More than 50,000 people were evacuated nationwide between late June and July due to wildfires spreading rapidly, especially around the cities of Izmir and Bursa, the scientists noted.
